In January 2011, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall left the comfort of River Cottage behind, and went on a journey to find out what was really going on at the industrial end of our fisheries. What he found was that things are not just bad ... They’re mad. Hugh learnt that half the fish caught in the North Sea are being thrown back into the sea, dead, because of crazy EU laws. His journey was shown in the first series of Hugh’s Fish Fight: Watch all four programmes on 4oD.
So, Hugh launched a campaign to try to change those laws and was supported by a wide coalition of environmental Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), fishermen, companies and policy makers.

The response from the UK public was incredible. Over 850,000 people have now signed the Fish Fight petition, and so many people emailed their MPs to protest about discards that they forced a debate in the Houses of Parliament. Even Prince Charles lent his support.

The campaign has had a huge impact across Europe too, as Hugh found allies to lead the Fish Fight in Spain, France, Germany and Poland. In July 2012 the European Commission(the EU’s executive body) said that a discard ban should be central to the new Common Fisheries Policy, which will be in place by 2014. But their proposal has to be agreed by the Council of Ministers (made up of all the fisheries ministers of EU member states), and the European Parliament (made up of the MEPs we all elect to represent us in Europe).

Thanks in part to pressure from Fish Fighters across Europe, both the Council of Ministers and European Parliament have agreed that there should be a discard ban! Now they have to work out the detail, and ensure that it is an effective, workable ban. Such big changes in the way fishermen fish and fisheries are managed will be hard work, and some interests would like to keep the status quo. Fish Fight will continue to keep up the pressure in Europe until the new CFP is a done deal and we can say goodbye to discards for good.
