guide for CHIP SHOP OWNERS
Are you a Chip Shop owner who’d like to put Mackerel on the menu? Here’s a few suggestions to get you started.
1. Get your stockist on board
Contact your fish supplier to see if they can supply you with fillets of Mackerel – frozen or fresh. It may be worth asking if they will V-cut or V-bone them for your convenience, though this can be done when prepping your fish prior to frying.
2. Promote, Promote, Promote
We found that a few free samples of this new product helped to kick start our mini revolution...so be prepared to push. Offer a tasty sample at the point of sale and inform your staff to offer it to customers.
3. Remember the benefits
To convince customers to buy remind them that: Mackerel is high in beneficial Omega 3 oils and is a lighter option that regular fish and chips. It costs less than many of the other options on the menu. Plus, it’s British and in plentiful supply. In the trials in Weymouth, we’ve found that after only two months’ trading, Mackerel has toppled other choices of fish to become the second best seller in three out of four of our participating restaurants!
4. Get on the Mackerel Mission Map
Most importantly tell us when you’ve changed your menu so we can help spread the word.
CONVINCING YOUR CHIP SHOP
Would you like your local chip shop to offer Mackerel as an alternative to cod? Here’s a few pointers to get you going.
1. If you don’t ask, you don’t get
Speak to your local fish and chip shop directly, to see if they would be willing to try it and direct them towards our Chip Shop owner’s guide (above).
2. Get a pin on the Mackerel Map
Add your details and the name of the chip shop you’re hoping will stock Mackerel, we'll be in touch and then will give you a pin.
3. If at first you don’t succeed...
Have a look at our Mackmap to locate your next nearest fryer who does stock Mackerel.
4. Get your friends involved
Ask all your friends to make the same request...and the shops will have to start listening!
5. Keep us updated
Once you’ve successfully ‘revolutionised’ your local takeaway, let us know we’ll update your pin and make sure everyone else knows about it too.
